BriCollab Art Collective
The BriCollab Art Collective is committed to initiating and supporting egalitarian, inclusive and collaborative exchange of thought on and production of art among all students at The New School. Reflecting on the discourse around democracy created by OWS, this workshop brought the collective’s ideals to the extreme by applying direct democratic decision making and action processes to collaborative art production.
As members and non-members of the collective worked together, they produced an art work that is greater than the sum of its parts: transmedial, reflective, spontaneous, political – a workshop-performance, reflective and progressive at once, manifesting in bodies, spoken word and materiality.
The participants built musical instruments from the materials at their disposal. These inadvertently reflect important aspects of the OWS movement: music as a communal factor, DIY culture, recycling, and sustainability. At the same time the artists strived to explore the specific sound qualities of the materials and to question the established understanding of both music as well as the (genius) musician. Gallery visitors are encouraged to play or appropriate the musical instruments in their own way!
