Before the Raid

Kate Slininger

Since Day One of Occupy Wall Street, we have been documenting the community at Zuccotti Park and the major demonstrations by protesters. Throughout our involvement, we often struggled with our roles in the movement, especially when the possibility of arrest forced us to reflect on our position. Were we media? Were we participants? Were we simply observers? Despite our questions, we knew it was important to gather information and document the events. Here we present four pieces, including audio recordings, photographs, and video. The audio was recorded during the march to Times Square on the Global Day of Action, October 15. We shot the video at Zuccotti Park, to document the evolution of its community, just days before the park was raided and cleared of protesters and their belongings. The photos were shot on the November 17 march to the New York Stock Exchange, which was in response the raid two days before. We would like to create a multimedia installation that includes these pieces, as a portrait of the movement.
