Those Who Profit from Ignorance Fear Knowledge

Mike Susol and Xiaoye Lin

As part of a Design & Technology Major Studio project, we decided to add to the dialogue at OWS by constructing a giant crossword puzzle. We built and deployed a modular and highly portable white board with a crossword puzzle overlay just one week before the police action that cleared Zuccotti Park in November. Our site survey and preliminary research indicated that there was an opportunity to engage people in meaningful conversation by inviting them to participate in a collaborative challenge. Our crossword clues and answers were developed with the intention of provoking debate by deliberately creating contextual overlaps between issues such as consumer responsibility and corporate greed.
